Recent Developments in Jet Clustering

Matteo Cacciari (LPTHE Paris 6)
Seminar Room 3, 15:00

Jets act as brokers between experimental measurements and perturbative
theoretical predictions in QCD. For them to perform such task effectively,
the clustering algorithms should meet certain requirements, laid down in
the Snowmass accord in 1990 but then never fully implemented. We will
describe how this impasse was recently overcome by improving existing jet
algorithms and introducing new ones. We will further show how the
techniques introduced in doing so have led to qualitatively new ways of
using jet clustering, paving the way for jet areas, background subtraction,
`third generation' algorithms and the novel concept of `jetography'.
