The Decade of 1969-1979: How Quarks and Gluons Became Real

Paul Söding (DESY und Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin)
Seminar Room 3, 15:00

In the 50th year of DESY’s existence it comes natural to reflect
on the past. Between 1969 and 1979 our view on the strong
interaction underwent a profound change. In theory, new field
theoretical concepts were driving the development. In experiment,
the emerging technology of colliding beams caused a breakthrough.
The combined efforts led to the quarks becoming elevated from
a vague theoretical idea to real physical objects, and also the
gluons put into almost direct evidence. Some of the tops and flops
in those crucial steps towards the Standard Model will be recalled.
