Galaxies in the Cosmic Web

Philipp Richter (Universität Potsdam)
Seminar Room 3, 15:00

Galaxies are surrounded by large amounts of gaseous
matter. This material indicates the complex matter exchange
between the condensed galactic bodies and the surrounding
intergalactic medium in the cosmic web. The infall
of metal-poor gas from the intergalactic medium and
from disrupted satellite-galaxies provides fresh material
for the formation of stars in spiral galaxies. Studies of
gas-accretion processes of galaxies therefore are crucial
for our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies
in the Universe. In this talk I will review the most recent
results in this field.
