Cameras for Cherenkov Telescopes … for Pedestrians.

Gianluca Giavitto | DESY
Seminar room 3, 15:00

In the past 30 years the imaging atmospheric Cherenkov technique has openend a new observational window onto the universe. The cameras of Cherenkov telescopes have been the main technological drivers of this progress, and are one of the key areas of the R&D efforts for the upcoming CTA project. They are as important for very high-energy gamma-ray astrophysics as particle detectors are for high-energy particle physics. In this talk I will explain how they work, what are the technologies used and the challenges faced to build and operate them, and what is the role of DESY in their past and current development.
