Lattice Quantum Field Theory......for Pedestrians!

Karl Jansen (DESY)
Seminar room 3, 15:00

The basics of lattice quantum field theories are explained and the use of it for non-perturbative problems is motivated. We formulate a quantum mechanical model on a Euclidean time lattice and then proceed to a simple gauge theory in two dimensions with added quark fields. The changes required to define lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) are discussed. The techniques to simulate such systems are explained, the enormous progress in LQCD calculations in recent years is demonstrated, and examples of recently computed important physical quantities are given.

After the coffee break an exercise session is offered with a lattice simulation of the quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator.
Please bring your laptop.
