Perspectives for neutrino oscillations

The determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy and the leptonic Dirac CP phase are the outstanding issues in neutrino oscillation physics after the discovery of a non-zero value of theta_13. For the mass hierarchy, novel concepts have been recently drawing quite some attention. One example is a potential upgrade of the IceCube detector at the South Pole using the Earth matter effects on atmospheric neutrinos, called "Precision IceCube Next Generation Upgrade" (PINGU). For CP violation, most likely a dedicated long-baseline experiment will be needed. We discuss the prospects and challenges of these approaches, and the perspectives for neutrino oscillations in the coming years.
