Striving to observe rare processes, such as those involving very high mass particles, sets the scale for the planned High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) Upgrade in 2024. This modification of the LHC is planned to provide ten times the amount of data as recorded before. The HL-LHC environment will be a significant challenge for the detectors - they will have to handle an average of 140 secondary collisions accompanying the main collision, as well as unprecedented levels of radiation exposure. DESY takes a leading role in the current planning and developments for the ATLAS experiment to handle these conditions - an overview of which is given here.
