SwissFEL – PSI's Hard X-Ray Free Electron Laser Facility

Hans-H. Braun (PSI)
Seminar Room 3, 15:00

PSI is preparing the construction of a hard X-ray FEL, SwissFEL,
as its next major research facility. The baseline design consists
of a 5.8 GeV linear accelerator and two undulator lines covering
the wavelength range from 1-70 Å. SwissFEL features an r.m.s.
pulse length of less than 12 fs, 100 Hz pulse rate in both FEL lines
simultaneously, polarization control and seeding for soft X-rays
and an independent high field THz source for pump-probe experiments.
The scientific case for SwissFEL has been discussed in a series of
topical workshops and is documented in the recently published
SwissFEL science case report. The technical R&D for SwissFEL
is moving ahead rapidly, with a first gun test facility in operation
since early 2009 and construction of the SwissFEL 250 MeV injector
including the first bunch compressor close to completion. For the
whole facility a staged construction is planned, with the goal to
start commissioning of the first FEL line in early 2016.
