From the LHC to the cosmos: Casting light on new phenomena

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the highest energy hadron collider in the world, enabling important insights into the nature of elementary particles. While most research focuses on hadronic interactions, the LHC simultaneously serves as the world’s highest energy photon collider. This provides a unique, clean laboratory for testing the Standard Model and searching beyond it. In this colloquium, I will show how we can use these photon collisions to measure tau-lepton electromagnetic moments and discuss tracking techniques that enable the identification of photon collisions. I will conclude by showing a recent ATLAS measurement of charged-particle tracks from the milestone proton-oxygen run, showcasing another unique application of the LHC.
