First results from the Webb Telescope: Well Worth the Wait

Prof. Tom Ray (Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies)
Zoom, 1 PM

The James Webb Space Telescope was launched on Christmas Day 2021 and, after cool down and a period of commissioning, starting sending back first results in July. These are not only stunning but also already starting to change our ideas about exoplanets, star and planetary formation as well as the early Universe. After reviewing the capabilities of the instruments on board, concentrating particularly on the Mid-Infrared Instrument which the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies helped build, I will explain in broad terms the significance of the early science observations and provide some case studies of what we might expect in the future.

This is a VIDEO COLLOQUIUM!
