From PDFs and Heavy Quarks at HERA to the LHC

Precise knowledge of the proton structure is of utmost importance for the interpretation of the LHC data. The proton parton density functions (PDFs) are determined at HERA with high accuracy using the Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) measurements. Charm quarks contribute up to about 30% to the total DIS cross section through their production in the boson gluon fusion process. In this process gluons from the proton are directly involved. Therefore charm quark physics is very important for the QCD analysis of the proton structure, which is intricate due to theoretical ambiguities in the treatment of heavy quarks. The world most precise result on the charm contribution to the proton structure function is obtained at HERA by the combination of all charm measurements from H1 and ZEUS. In the talk the role of HERA charm measurements in the QCD analysis of the proton structure and the consequences for the LHC analyses will be discussed.
