Electron-Positron Linear Collider: Past, Present and Future

With one year left of its mandate, the International Linear Collider (ILC) Global Design Effort is now preparing for the publication of the ILC Technical Design Report. At the same time the LHC is opening up the Terascale and changing the physics landscape. It is therefore a good time to look back over the now long history of the linear collider and reflect on both were we have been and where we might be going. In this lecture I will present a personal view of the now over twenty year old linear collider story, together with some thoughts on the still many challenges ahead to realising the great adventure.
