DESERTEC – Clean Power from Deserts for a Sustainable World with 10 Billion People
Gerhard Knies (DESERTEC Foundation)
Seminar Room 3, 16:00h (note unusual time!)
Humankind is on the way to a world population of 10 billion,
while earth’s carrying capacity is declining from 5 to 3 billion,
caused by ecological deteriorations, mainly because of the
use of fossil fuels. A rapid transition to abundant, clean and
inexhaustible energies at a global scale could provide sufficient
energy for continued development of developed and of developing
civilizations, together with a drastic reduction of green house
gas emissions and a limitation of world population growth.
I will describe how this can be achieved by clean power from
deserts: what are the required volumes for 10 billion people,
the required pace for the 2° limit, the needed technologies
and financial incentives, and the needed political approaches
to put the DESERTEC Concept in place at a global scale.
