The role of event generators in the exploration of QCD

Torbjörn Sjöstrand (Lund University)
Auditorium (DESY Hamburg) and Zoom, 16:00h

The theory of strong interactions, QCD, recently turned 50. Its confinement properties makes it less easily tested than the electroweak model. From early days therefore computer simulation in the form of event generators came to play a key role, both in the establishment of the basic aspects of the QCD Lagrangian and in the exploration of QCD properties in a broader sense. This presentation will give a historical (subjective) overview of some of the key steps on this road, from the early successes up to current open issues. Notably, the PETRA collider at DESY offered several early insights.
