Monte Carlo simulations are an essential tool to guide the design of the Cherenkov Telescope Array and for the interpretation of data obtained from prototypes and the final instrument. The MC calculations consists of simulation of the air shower development, the production of Cherenkov light, light losses in the atmospheres, and a detailed modelling of the light detection with the CTA telescopes including the full simulation of the electronic readout chain. We discuss in this presentation the physics and simulation procedures in detail on a level accessible to non-specialists.
